The West Cumbria Mines Research Group has now closed
the Florence Mine Heritage Centre which it has operated successfully
since 1992. The group intends to develop a new and much enhanced
centre to celebrate the mining heritage of the west coast of Cumbria
and the social impact of this once great industry.
Working in partnership
with many local organisations, including the Cumbria tourist Board,
Egremont Regeneration Partnership, West Cumbria Development Fund
and West Lakes Renaisance, the group is evaluating various oppertunities
for this new iniative but has reluctantly concluded that the Florence
Mine Site is no longer suitable for the venture.
The group has now relocated
to temporary accomodation in Cleator Moor. The large collection
of mining artifacts and data that has been accumulated by the group
over the years is being retained for use in the new centre. For
further information please contact the group through our contact
us page.
